32 years of Independence Restoration of Georgia

April 9 marks two important historical events in Georgia – the tragedy of 1989 and the country’s independence in 1991.

On this day 32 years ago, 21 Georgian citizens were killed and scores injured by the Soviet Army during an anti-Soviet demonstration held on Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi. Those who lost their lives during this brutal crackdown did so while fighting for their country’s independence.

Two year later, on April 9, 1991, on the second anniversary of the tragedy, the Supreme Council of Georgia declared Georgia’s sovereignty and independence from the Soviet Union based on the results of a nationwide referendum. The path to independence was not easy but the will of the people of Georgia eventually earned them victory.

Every year, on this day, public figures as well as ordinary Georgian citizens lay flowers on the memorial built beside the Parliament of Georgia as a sign of respect for those who died heroically in their fight for freedom and independence.

The Republic of Azerbaijan has always supported Georgia during national hardships. Today these two countries have achieved significant success as a result of independence and will continue this success into the future. Freedom and independence are ideas and values that serve to immortalize the names of the Georgian heroes who have sacrificed their lives for their homeland.
