Power Supply Reliability

Reliable power is a fundamental requirement for any organization. Reliable power has a direct impact on most aspects of an automation system and the equipment it controls. Electrical systems are subject to a wide variety of power quality problems, which can interrupt industrial processes and affect sensitive equipment. Power quality problems can result in unnecessary downtime due to equipment failure.

The power supply and distribution system of Black Sea Terminal consists of several facilities including substation control building, outdoor switchgears, indoor switchgears, transformer substations and so on. Terminal buildings, pump stations and facilities with sensitive equipment require clean and stable power to operate uninterruptedly. There are a number of devices to minimize or eliminate power distortions, and on-load tap changers are one of them.

On-load tap-changers (OLTCs) are indispensable in regulating power transformers used in electrical energy networks and industrial applications. They regulate the output voltage to required levels. OLTCs enable voltage regulation and/or phase shifting by varying the transformer ratio under the load without interruption. Recently we upgraded the OLTCs, which play an essential role in the optimum operation of our electrical system.

Black Sea Terminal has its own emergency power system, an independent reserve source of electrical energy – Diesel Power Stations with a transfer/startup time of 10 to 20 seconds, which can secure personnel safety or loss of control of property or business, when the principle energy source is lost. One of the major components of this uninterruptible power supply is the power transformer. The correct and timely maintenance of the transformer is of vital importance to avoid any unplanned power outage and potential equipment failure. One of the maintenance activities that help to avoid such a failure is transformer oil analysis, and it is an essential part of Black Sea Terminal’s preventive maintenance program. The trouble-free operation of power transformers is a factor of major economic importance and safety in the power supply utilities of Black Sea Terminal.

Transformer oil should be tested periodically. Regular sampling and testing of insulation oil taken from transformers is a valuable technique in our preventive maintenance program and maintenance department regularly conducts the transformer (insulating) oil analysis. If oil analysis shows the trend of probability of faults to be occurring, outages can be planned and the fault can be rectified before major failure occurs. Our proactive approach based on the condition of the transformer oil ensures maximizing of life expectancy of transformers.

Our skilled technicians perform power quality monitoring and analyze the relevant data in a timely fashion to reveal any deficiencies and plan appropriate preventive or corrective actions to ensure uninterruptible and stable power supply for our terminal.
